Welcome to the project website for Thorpe Marsh Green Energy Hub

Our project

Thorpe Marsh Green Energy Hub is a battery energy storage system (BESS) currently being built at Thorpe Marsh, South Yorkshire. It’s located on part of the site of the former Thorpe Marsh Power Station.

The project is being developed by Fidra Energy.

Battery energy storage systems are a proven low-cost technology which uses groups of batteries to store excess electricity from renewable energy sources. This electricity is released to homes and businesses when needed.

Thorpe Marsh Green Energy Hub is currently the largest battery storage project in the UK.

Once complete it will have capacity to power 800,000 homes helping to make the electricity network in the UK and Yorkshire more secure, self-sufficient and resilient.

Learn more about our project, its technology, timeline and our Thorpe Marsh site by seeing the About the project page.

Construction update:
February 2026

Work on our project is progressing well, despite the poor weather we have all experienced over the autumn and winter.

From 10 September 2025, we began “cut and fill” works involving pulverised fuel ash, the waste material left over from the power station.
